Bill changing debt collection to make enforcement impossible

Collectors could soon
work from home

Right now, being a debt collector working from home is illegal in Wisconsin.

That could change with a proposed bill in Madison.

A bill that would create all sorts of problems, says Vicky Selkowe from the group, Legal Action of Wisconsin, during recent public testimony at the capitol.

“You’re going to be unleashing a flood of debt collectors,” Selkowe said, “unsupervised, unmonitored, unregulated on your constituents – Particularly on your older constituents and on your constituents that are veterans.”

She says debt collectors have to follow specific guidelines and limits in the state now. If they’re working from home, she says, there’s no way to enforce those limits.
