Wisconsin counties considering raising smoking age
Hawaii is first state
to raise minimum to 21
Some counties in Wisconsin have considered raising the smoking age to 21.
It hasn’t happened anywhere in the lower 48 states, but it has happened in Hawaii beginning on New Year’s Day.
There, electronic-cigarette use has run rampant with teenagers. “Figures from six Hawaii high schools, among the ninth- and 10th-grade students, 29 percent have used electronic smoking devices at least once and 18 percent use them regularly,” according to a recent legislature study.
La Crosse County health educator Judi Zabel says a few Wisconsin counties have discussed the idea of raising the smoking age on their own. Whether La Crosse County was among those communities is unknown. But Zabel did think raising the age may be a useful tool among the strategies for keeping young people from developing a tobacco habit.
