Three dozen downtown La Crosse surveillance cameras going up

New surveillance cameras for downtown La Crosse might not be available for tonight’s festivities. 

Sometime in the next month, thought, the three dozen-or-so cameras are expected to be operational.

Crews began installation earlier this month. The cameras are meant to help police solve crimes but also keep crime from happening in the first place.

La Crosse City Vision Foundation began fundraising for the cameras nearly three years ago. That fundraising has risen to about a $500,000.

Meanwhile, a couple of surveillance cameras have been operational in the city’s Riverside Park for several months. Those were funded through a federal Homeland Security grant.
