Dreaming of a white Christmas

Snow is in the forecast

It could be a white Christmas after all in the La Crosse area. But not that white. And not until late.

There’s a 7-in-10 chance of getting an inch or more of snow on Christmas, much like Dec. 18. But that chance would fall late on Christmas night.

If there’s no snow, it would be the second consecutive brown Christmas and third in the last five years.

Last year’s high on the holiday was 42, and the heaviest snowfall of the whole month was an inch on the Dec. 23. But the National Weather Service says the historic odds are in favor of at least one inch of snow on the ground for Christmas. It happens 70 percent of the time.

But these are odds we’ve seen the whole month of December, and the best chance of snow seems to be early on Dec. 26.

Our highs this holiday weekend are likely to be around normal – upper 20s – after a long period of 30s and 40s.
