Doyle thinks bill to impound cars of unlicensed is far from reality

It’s hard to take the last broadside against poor people very seriously for one state lawmaker.

Onalaska democratic state rep Steve Doyle says the proposal for police to immediately impound cars of those who have a suspended license doesn’t seem to be grounded in reality.

“What it does is ignore the reason why a lot of people don’t have their license,” Doyle said, “which is they either don’t have enough money to get reinstated or they don’t have their act together enough to get reinstated.”

It might also be unconstitutional, adds Doyle.

But the proposed bill, getting circulated for co-sponsors by a republican legislator right now, would also prove unworkable for police departments that would suddenly have to face massive costs of seizing, impounding and, eventually, trying to auction thousands of vehicles owned by the unlicensed.
