Council voted to increase
pay by nearly $5,000

A raise for the mayoral position in La Crosse has been vetoed multiple times by current mayor Tim Kabat.

He does, however, support giving the city clerk a raise. And, the newest proposal from a city council meeting Tuesday would pay the city clerk position, ironically, just a few thousand dollars less than the mayor, himself.

The proposed pay increase for city clerk is $75,000. The mayor’s current salary is $77,200.

Right now, the city clerk makes just over $70,00. The original plan was to increase that salary to $72,500, until Tuesday’s meeting.

The pay increase would go into effect after the next election. The city clerk, the mayor and the municipal judge are the only city-wide elected offices in La Crosse.

The mayor has vetoed salary increases for his position – that would also go into effect after the next election – multiple times, including an increase to nearly $80,000.
