La Crosse superintendent says numbers for free/reduced lunches are high

Around 80 percent of students at
one La Crosse school receive the benefit

The latest numbers from the La Crosse school district show 46 percent of students receive free or reduced lunches.

Superintendent Randy Nelson says, yes, the numbers are high, especially in some schools where eight-in-ten students are getting free or reduced meals. But Nelson says there’s a reason some schools are so high.

One-third of students don’t stay in the same building all year. Others transfer to different buildings while some transfer out of the district all together.

 

In the district, there are at least six elementary schools at or above 50 percent with Northside leading the way at 80. Logan Middle leads middle schools with 60 percent. At the high school level, La Crosse Roads leads with 66 percent of students getting free or reduced lunch.
