La Crescent, Minn. – Tonight’s the night to speak on behalf of keeping a cross on public land in La Crescent, while an atheist group from Madison, apparently bringing an entourage, comes to try and have it removed.

The meeting starts at 5 p.m. at the La Crescent community center.

The atheist “Freedom from Religion Foundation,” aims to make its way to the small town in Minnesota to protest a lighted cross and star on public land, and demand it be taken down from the hillside. Last week the group called it “ridiculous” it was on display.

La Crescent Mayor Mike Poellinger says there is a lot of public support for keeping the star and cross.

Monday night, the La Crescent council was told that the sponsor of the symbols, the local Lions Club, is interested in buying the land where the star and cross are located. The club already pays for the electricity to light the piece.

Earlier this month, a petition went around, gaining over 3,000 signatures. in favor of keeping the star and cross where it is.
