Farmer charged with six counts animal neglect

LANESBORO, Minn. – Neglected cattle seized from a farm in Utica in early September brought in $50,000 to the Winona County Sheriff’s Dept.

A total of 60 cows, calves and one bull – four animals had to be euthanized – were auctioned off last week in Lanesboro, after being taken from Patrick James Shea’s farm. The 51-year-old was charged with six counts of animal neglect and failure to provide food, shelter and water. Shea will also be charged with fees in caring for and moving the cattle.

Ownership was transferred to Winona County and the sale took place through a sales commission.

The Animal Humane Society of Minnesota assisted the sheriff’s department with the care and the welfare of the cattle after they were rescued.
