Asbestos in the city council chambers

Building next door has asbestos, as well

More asbestos is lurking in the rafters of old government buildings in downtown La Crosse. 

The city board of public works has authorized a study to figure out whether the cancer-causing fire proofer has to be removed or can be covered up. 

Bob Haines from the public works department says the problem asbestos is in the ceiling above the audience area of the city council chambers.  City Hall opened in 1970. 

The county administrative center next door, built in 1965, is scheduled to undergo a thorough asbestos removal process, when it’s converted to student housing.
