La Crosse schools’ bus problem only slightly improving

Parents getting concerned about children left at the road

Busing transportation challenges have plagued the La Crosse School District so far this fall.

Kids have been picked up late or not picked up at all, and parents are getting very concerned.

La Crosse superintendent Randy Nelson thought First Student, which has the busing contract, was not properly staffed to start the year. The district has experienced slight improvements, he added, but not at once classes are over at the elementary schools.

The district has reached out to other area bus companies to determine if they have the capacity to address the gaps in service, which would alleviate route stress for them, Nelson said.

Another possible change, which could come as early as the fall, would be to change the bus routes altogether.

Because of the recent problems, the La Crosse School District has asked parents and community members to voice their concerns by sending email to [email protected] or calling 608.789.7652.

Nelson said that First Student has apologized for the transportation problems.

In a letter, First Student said it has made a leadership change with the removal of the location manager and the company is bringing in an experienced replacement.

They are also looking to hire new and former bus drivers with signing bonuses available.
