Chief cites “weakest link” in opposing booze on pedal pubs

Plenty of support for cabs, not for pedaling and drinking

You’ll probably see big pedal-driven cars on the streets of La Crosse soon. But don’t call them pedal pubs; booze won’t be allowed. 

At least that’s the direction things are going after a city council committee vote Tuesday that approved a license for the pedal cars.  

The last thing the city needs, argues police chief, Ron Tischer, is to have those be rolling bars.  

“Are there people who are not going to abuse it?” Tischer pondered aloud at a city council committee meeting Tuesday night. “Absolutely. But, I always have to think of the weakest link, and the weakest link is right next door, here, in our college town.” 

The move to license the large pedal cabs comes after a business owner approached the city about operating, what is essentially, a giant four-wheeled, human-powered cycle on the streets of La Crosse. Apparently, that business owner does not mind the alcohol restrictions.

The new rules for the pedal cars also prohibit them from playing loud music. The regulations also require a $2 million insurance policy for the operator.
