More stops, better than faster trains, director says

There won’t be a new high-speed rail in La Crosse, but there could be more passenger trains.

Amtrak says there’s merit in a plan to double the number of passenger train stops in La Crosse.

A La Crosse area committee spent several years promoting the idea of high-speed Amtrak rail service for western Wisconsin, but that idea is pretty much dead.

LADCO director Jim Hill says if Amtrak had not shown an interest in expanding the Empire Builder service, the idea of doubling the number of passenger stops would have reached a dead end, too.

Hill says having more passenger rail stops is a bigger deal for travelers than how fast the train can go.

The proposal before Amtrak would have two La Crosse stops a day for the eastbound train, and two stops for the westbound route.
