New rest area planned for French Island
It’s less than 40 years old, but for a publicly-used building, that’s old age. The DOT welcome center on French Island will be taken down soon, to be replaced by a new and larger center.
Ben Wolf, with the Short Elliott Hendrickson architects of La Crosse, says the existing building is in need of maintenance and repair because of its age. He and the Wisconsin DOT showed off designs for a new welcome center and Mile 1 rest area at a public meeting last night. Construction of a newer rest stop should begin next May, and take about five months to complete.
