A court battle may be ahead for the city of La Crosse over property

taxes.  Retail giants like Walgreen’s, Macy’s, Sears and K-Mart are among businesses challenging their property assessments.  The tactic, which businesses have increasingly been using throughout the state of Wisconsin, is to issue last minute challenges, threatening court action if city councils and town boards deny the appeals.  That appears to be the likely next step in La Crosse, with the city’s finance committee turning down the current assessment appeals.  The full city council votes on the issue next week.  At stake are hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax revenue this year.
