A convicted felon caught holding a public position and running a mayoral

campaign. Our newsrooms #5 top story of 2014. Our newsroom found out that Tomah Alderman, Leroy Kelsey was running for mayor, though he had been convicted of a felony in 1991. A huge no no. After we confronted Kelsey with some facts on his past felony case, he opened up to us a bit.

Kelsey freely admitted signing two sets candidacy papers. He also said he had received a letter from the attorney general’s office a week earlier telling him he was in violation of the law. Kelsey had immediately resigned his alderman position, halted his mayoral campaign, and took down all his signs and his campaign website.  Then he was arrested and charged with two felonies. He was later found guilty of false swearing and sentenced to community service and a fine.
