A case of a cop caught stealing drugs ranks high on our newsroom’s list of top local stories from 2013.

The investigation of former police lieutenant Brian Thomson is number six on the year-end list. Thomson’s case came to light suddenly in August, when La Crosse police announced his resignation on the same day he was brought to court. The department suspected Thomson of tampering with drug evidence being stored at City Hall, and got proof when he reportedly took fake pills from a package that specifically was planted to catch him. Earlier this month, Thomson pled guilty to attempting to possess narcotics. He’s scheduled to be sentenced in late January.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
