Cop Attacker Gets Another Release Hearing In January

First, a doctor’s exam…then, another date in court.

Joseph Smith of Holmen again is going through a familiar routine, in hopes of being freed from a mental hospital. Judge Dale Pasell has assigned a doctor to study Smith, and then file a report for a January 31st court hearing. Smith was committed to the Mendota hospital after wounding a La Crosse police officer with a screwdriver in 2006. He requested release earlier this year, but withdrew the request when doctors seemed to be against letting him out.

 

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
