Dispute Over Setback Rules Delays Barron Island Development

Developers have been making progress on plans for some multi-family housing at the site of the old Holiday Inn on Barron Island in La Crosse.  Until now.  West Coast Development’s Joe Van Aelstyn says, after drawing up lots for the mini neighborhood, the Wisconsin DOT told him about a third of the lots he could build on because they’re too close to highway 14-61.  No houses, sheds, driveways, rain gardens.  Nothing

Van Aelstyn says platting for the development, which would still have to get approval by the city council, is on hold indefinitely until he can work something out with the DOT
