Name Change Flares In Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) A long-running dispute over the name of the Washington NFL franchise is flaring up in Minnesota. American Indian groups and supporters say the construction of a new Minnesota Vikings stadium offers a chance to put new pressure on the NFL over the Washington Redskins name and logo. They’re asking the agency building Minnesota’s new stadium to ban the word Redskins on publicly owned signs or address systems there, as well as the existing Metrodome when the Vikings host Washington Nov 7.

Stadium authority spokeswoman Jenn Hathaway says the board may have a formal response next week. Opponents of the Redskins name say they’ll protest at the Metrodome before the game.

President Barack Obama told The Associated Press last week the team should consider changing the name.
