Four Landscape Horticulture students from Western Technical College found more than Birch and Maple as they walked near campus studying for a tree identification test.

Katie Christensen, Scott White, Ian Young, and Daren Scott were in the area of 9th and Main Streets on September 11th when they found an unresponsive female lying in the shrubs. Christensen and Young attempted to wake the woman and noticed that her breathing was irregular and her eyes were rolling back in her head. White and Scott went to the La Crosse Public Library Museum to have the staff call 911.

The students stayed with the woman until an ambulance arrived. The paramedics determined the woman was diabetic and hadn’t taken her medication. Her name and current condition are unknown, but White says they hope their actions made a difference.

Western Technical College will honor the students’ actions during the District Board Meeting tonight, where they will be presented with a special commendation.
