Sparta Police thought they had a murder suspect on their hands late last
week. Turns out the man they had in custody was not supposed to be in this country.
An officer was running a registration check on 32 year old Abel Garcia when they learned that he did not have a valid driver’s license and that he may be wanted on a homicide warrant from Lafayette County. Garcia’s physical description matched those of the homicide suspect and officers sent his fingerprints into the FBI for comparison. Officers were later told that Garcia was not the person wanted, but was wanted by Immigration authorities as he had been deported previously and re-entered the country illegally.
Garcia remained in the custody of the Monroe County Jail.
