La Crosse wheel tax decision delayed for a month

Written by

There will be no wheel tax decision this month after all for the City of La Crosse.

Debate of Mayor Tim Kabat's proposed wheel tax won't happen until October.

The move came after Kabat publically announced plans to have the proposal in front of the council this month. It also comes as criticism has mounted in the public over the plan, which would charge $25 per eligible vehicle per year for five years.

The estimated $1.2 million raised annually would be used toward fixing roads. By state law the money would have to be used for transportation purposes.

Kabat's had an earful on the proposal since announcing the idea last month with many critics saying the city should better utilize the money it already collects in taxes. Many have questioned why the city can't do more with money it's already spending on things like parks.

Kabat wanted to wait on crafting the wheel tax legislation until after he got public feedback on the proposal.
