Legalizing marijuana referendum idea gets second endorsement by La Crosse County committees

Written by

It's looking more likely that voters in La Crosse County will get to speak out this fall on legalizing marijuana.

The La Crosse County Board makes the next move in deciding whether to put marijuana use up for a public vote in the county.

Within a 24-hour period, two county committees have voted to schedule a November referendum on whether pot should be legal in Wisconsin.

County board chair Tara Johnson said the executive committee focused Wednesday on whether legalization is a matter that should be placed on a referendum.

"Should this be a question that voters get to weigh in on, as opposed to the actual merrits of a 'yes or a no' vote on the referendum question?" she asked.

The final decision on having an advisory referendum will be up to the full county board at its next meeting on July 19.

No final action was taken on another resolution, dealing with a referendum on funding road repairs in La Crosse County.

Johnson says the executive committee will meet again Friday to work out the language for an advisory question on transportation.
