La Crosse police dealing with lots of hit and runs lately

Written by

Over the last two weeks, between 25-30 hit and runs have been dealt with by the La Crosse Police Dept.

Seems a little more than usual, according to La Crosse police sgt. Tom Walsh, and it's not like everybody is getting away clean.

"Our officers have been able to go back and view footage of the crashes as they occur and are able to identify the drivers or the other vehicles and take action against them," Walsh said. "Obviously, we don't want to have to get to that though."

The fine for a hit and run is $260 if nobody is in the car. Jail time is possible for hitting a vehicle with someone in it and leaving the scene.

Most hit and runs the police department has dealt with come to unattended cars. But, of course, that doesn't mean you get to just leave if nobody is around to be told you hit their car. Walsh says leave an note with all your information.

"If you don't feel comfortable leaving your information out there, you need to at least make a call to the police department and at least make them aware you were involved in a crash," he added.
