City finds $1.5 million in funding supporters needed for Memorial Pool rebuild

FEMA money was apparently not accounted for in new budget

The Veterans Memorial Pool renovation project in La Crosse is getting a massive boost.

The city council on Thursday approved changes that could lead to an extra $665,000 next year toward the rebuild of the ancient pool by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The money's not a guarantee, though it is close to it.

The funding is contingent on what the city collects from insurers and FEMA for giant storms that did hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to the city. Apparently, the city's in negotiations with insurers over the final payout and has had a FEMA application accepted.

Money to pay for that damage was taken out of reserves but apparently never fully accounted for when creating a budget for next year in the city.

The additional funds will mean about $1.5 million the city will spend on the pool project. Coincidentally, that is around the amount supporters of the pool project had hoped for.
